Do you need a costume for Book Week?

Book Week began in 1946 when the Children’s Book Council of Australia wanted to celebrate children’s literature. However, this idea has expanded and many schools celebrate by having students dress-up as their favourite book character during Book Week, which is held in August.

Are you lacking inspiration? Don’t know what to make? We have all the answers on our shelves. Lots of children’s books that will provide you with ideas, plus books on how to make costumes. Why not try your hand at making a Charlie and Lola Costume or a  Very Hungry Caterpillar costume?

Borrow your child’s favourite book and go searching in your local second hand shop for bits and pieces.

Alternatively, look at books such as Party! : the Ultimate Kids’ Birthday Party Book or The Complete Book of Dressing Up by Juliet Moxley, or Easy-to-make costumes by Kathryn Harrison and Valerie Kohn and try your hand at making a costume with your child.

Have fun this Book Week.
