Murder Mystery Nights: Three Towns, Too Many Costumes, One Very Dramatic Death

Murder Mystery Nights: Three Towns, Too Many Costumes, One Very Dramatic Death

Words Out West Fringe Event: An immersive storytelling experience, brought to life by our communities in Wandoan, Tara and Chinchilla.

The clues were planted, the secrets were whispered, and the accusations flew! Our Murder Mystery Nights wrapped up with three unforgettable evenings in Wandoan, Chinchilla and Tara, each bringing their own brand of drama. Across all three nights, participants received their characters ahead of time, complete with secrets to spread and objectives to achieve. One person was even chosen to “die” later in the evening, turning the mystery into a double investigation and keeping everyone guessing until the very end.

We kicked things off in Wandoan, and honestly… there was not a single out-of-costume attendee. Not one. The commitment was unmatched. The undertaker was already measuring people up before they’d even died, which really set the tone for the night. Thanks to Karen, who rallied the community and delivered an incredible turnout, the evening was a huge success from start to finish.

Next stop: Chinchilla. Costumes to the left of me, costumes to the right, and there I was, stuck in a butler’s outfit with absolutely no butlering to do. From the very beginning, participants threw themselves enthusiastically into the story and into character. Gauntlets were thrown. Duels were mediated. And in what can only be described as a highlight, the doctor brought an actual liver to a will reading (which, frankly, sounds like a Taylor Swift song). All in all, a fabulous night. A big thank you to Macarla in Chinchilla, who was instrumental in the setup on the night and captured the festivities as our unofficial (and very talented) photographer.

We wrapped up in Tara, where once again there were too many costumes, to the point where I forgot what my own townfolk actually looked like. People didn’t just play their characters, they became them. Some are now renamed entirely (ex-Tara Library Services Officer, Krissy, will now forever be known as “Dr Pearson”), and the evening featured the most drawn-out, dramatic death of all three events, despite the ‘doctor’ yelling, “Would you hurry up and die already?”

Tara truly brought their A-for-acting game. There was plenty of heckling (sorry, not sorry), enthusiastic audience participation and a special mention to those who stayed completely in character while casually munching on their food. And thanks to Jaime in Tara who, when told there was no decorating budget, her response was simply, “Let’s do this.” What followed was a space transformed by creativity, initiative and pure commitment to the experience.

Three towns. Three very different vibes. One unforgettable series of nights filled with laughter, drama and just the right amount of murder.

This is just the beginning.
