Commemorating Remembrance Day

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row…

At 11am on 11 November 1918, hostilities officially ended when Germany called for an armistice and accepted the allied terms of unconditional surrender. This brought an end to World War One. The four-year conflict had left between 9 and 13 million dead and as many as one third of these with no grave.

In Australia and other allied countries, 11 November has become known as Remembrance Day. A day to remember and honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty.

Commemorate this Remembrance Day with stories of bravery and sacrifice.

Many books have been written about the battles of Gallipoli, the place, and what happened on Gallipoli Beach in 1915. With beautiful and painterly illustrations by Bruce Whately this is a book that explores the beach where the battles took place. In focusing on the actual place of war, the book will also examine many other aspects of WW1. From the soldiers and the conditions they fought in, to the civilians at home.

World War One : A history in 100 stories – Bruce Scates

There has been no shortage of heroic stories over the course of the Anzac Centenary. Stories of courage and sacrifice, fortitude and endurance, mateship and resolve. But a hundred years on, there is a need for other stories as well. The stories too often marginalised in favour of nation-building narratives.
