Be Connected: Online Lessons for Seniors

Be Connected is a free Australian Government initiative helping you to get the most our of going online, so you can add new skills and experiences to your life. There’s never been a better time to get online!

Western Downs Libraries are offering courses on a range of topics to help seniors become confident with navigating the internet and new technologies at Dalby Library.

Each topic runs over two weeks – you can sign up for one topic, or sign up for them all! These sessions are extremely flexible, however places are limited. To register, please contact Dalby Library on 4679 4418, drop into the branch to book your spot, or send us an email.

Get to Know your Device

Part 1: Monday 23 April
Part 2:Monday 30 April

10am – 12pm

This topic will help you learn about using a computer or mobile device such as a tablet or smartphone. You’ll also learn the basics of using a keyboard, a mouse, or a touch screen, and what a computer can do.

This topic includes courses on using a:

Getting Started Online 

Part 1: Tuesday 8 May 
Part 2: Monday 14 May

10am – 12pm

Now that you’ve got the basics covered, you can search and explore the internet, keep in touch using email or social media, fill in online forms and much more – all while being safe and secure.

Courses in this topic include:

  • using the internet
  • using online forms
  • using email
  • using search engines
  • an introduction to eSafety

Safety First

Part 1: Monday 21 May
Part 2: Monday 28 May

10am – 12pm

You might have heard stories about the dangers of the internet, like people pretending to be someone they’re not to steal someone else’s personal information. You don’t need to worry about being online as long as you know how to stay safe. You can do this by:

  • being careful with what you share
  • making sure you know who you are talking to, and
  • learning how to avoid scams

Courses in this topic include:

  • safe passwords
  • paying securely online
  • avoiding scams and tricks
  • downloading and saving documents
  • help and support

More Online Skills

Part 1: Monday 4 June
Part 2: Monday 11 June

10am – 12pm

Let’s make the most of being online! You’ll feel even more confident to do everyday things like online shopping or socialising with friends and family once you’ve done this topic.

  • using Facebook
  • using a digital camera
  • watching and listening online

Connecting with Others

Part 1: Monday 18 June
Part 2: Monday 25 June

10am – 12pm

The internet is a great and convenient way to see your family and friends, whether they live close by or far away. You’ll learn how to get set up with the correct equipment to make video calls, and the different ways to make free video calls using applications such as Skype, WhatsApp and Facetime.

  • getting set up for a video call
  • how to use Skype
  • how to use WhatsApp
  • how to use FaceTime
