The goals of Eagle Readers

All the staff at Western Downs Libraries are exited to introduce a new reading program. Eagle Readers is designed for primary school aged children, while Eaglet Readers is designed for the under 5’s.

The first goal of both programs is to increase the number of books that your child currently reads or listens to over the course of three months.

The second goal is to encourage families and children to visit the library and choose books for themselves.  Why is this important? Libraries give your child access to a wide range of books and they are all free. Selecting books for you to read aloud and for your child to read on their own improves their reading. Children get excited about reading when they select their own books. For instance, little Johnny may be interested in dinosaurs and we have a whole shelf dedicated to this subject. Research also shows that children that attend story time regularly enter school with greater pre-reading skills and emergent literacy skills needed to succeed at school.

Research also shows that children who visit the library regularly read better than their peers. The library environment instills the love of reading which leads to improved reading. All library staff will assist your child to choose a book that is the right level and genre for them.

Western Downs Libraries offer more than books. Today, technology of every kind is found at the library as well as audio books, DVD’s and magazines. Libraries allow you to escape the hustle and bustle of the town and relax in a nice quiet place and be in the moment with your family.

In conclusion, Eagle Readers has two main goals so please visit your local library and put your child’s name on the list – your child will benefit from reading, be awarded a certificate at the end and will receive an extra ticket in our special prize draws.  Happy reading Eagles and Eaglets.
