Help for the reluctant reader.

According to a 2010 report “8-18 year-olds devote an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes to using entertainment media across a typical day” (Rideout, Foehr and Roberts.) To combat this, the book industry has come to the rescue of frustrated parents of children who do not read. They are combining the printed book with such things as URLs, augmented reality, toys and CD’s. These books are called multimodal, multiplatform texts and are mainly aimed at the upper primary school student. The idea is to get your child hooked on the story and then they can further investigate the subject by using their tablet or phone.

The good news is we have some in our library:

The LEGO Games Book Multimodal Texts
Are your children into Lego. We have the book The Lego Games Book by Tori Kosara. This book allows your child to read instructions and then be challenged to make the design – step by step.

My Perfect Puppy (AR): With your very own Augmented Reality puppy Multimodal Texts
My Perfect Puppy by Kay Woodard is a great example of combining technology with the written word. You are able to enjoy amazing interactive digital experiences on every page and even feed him some yummy food. Your child can even pick a collar that is perfect for their puppy – on the screen of course.

Science - Collins Fascinating Facts Multimodal Texts
Ebooks are also included in some written books. For example, the book Science – Fascinating Facts by Anna Claybourne.

So next time you visit a Western Downs Library explore our multimodal collection and see what you can find.
